What Is Your Most Valuable Treasure

30 May 2017 Written by

Throughout life it seems that our heart is always in search of something. But what are we trying to find?

There is this restless feeling that we are missing something – and something of value. We’re not sure what it is, but sense that it is important.

And so we wander. We search. We look and hunger for this elusive something. Eventually we discover that we don’t have to even step out of our front door. Where we are sitting right this moment is the hiding place of everything that we have been looking for all our lives.

What is this elusive something that I have longed and searched for? Acceptance, love, compassion, contentment, peace and joy.

These are the treasures that lie within – not to be found externally. The truth of everything I need to know is all inside. Within this truth comes the understanding of who I am and the path that I should take. It’s all inside.

When I finally am stilled, the box of treasures within is broken open and the sweet incense is released. The great treasures that I seek are always with me and can never be taken away. For as has been said, Wherever I go, there I am.

Raised on a dairy farm in upstate NY, I learned to work hard along with my five siblings. I grew up in a very conservative Mennonite-Amish church which shaped a lot of my fundamental core values and beliefs. After moving to Florida to attend college, I married and became mother to five children. Eventually, my unmanageable life came to a crashing halt and I found my way into an Al-Anon recovery program. Recovery has affected every area of my life and I love sharing the things I am learning with others so that they might also find hope for their own recovery.
