Just try standing in “Tree” pose in Yoga and you will soon discover that balance is actually a dynamic process. I must continually work to stay in balance in my life. This fact requires me to practice self-control in all areas of my life.
Lao-tzu states the importance of knowing when to stop – to practice self-control. When do I stop my body? My words? When do I stop eating? When do I stop shopping? When do I stop controlling others? How about anger, work, sex? And most importantly, when do I stop my thoughts.
If I want to live in freedom and balance, I must practice self-control. No one can do this for me; only I can do this. I believe self-control first starts in my mind – in my thoughts. Learning to practice self-control in my thoughts will bring the desired outcome in my words and actions.
To avoid walking into danger, I must learn when to stop.
