A Reach Out Recovery Exclusive By Magdalene Taylor: Using Youtube to relax: how ASMR videos help me find peace
When it comes to creating serenity in your life there’s no quick fix, especially when your stress often comes from the problems of those around you. However, little steps add up, and eventually you can create a repertoire of habits and practices that make getting through each day feel a little bit easier. These habits can be things we’re all familiar with, like running, yoga, or meditation. But have you ever tried using Youtube to relax?
It may seem a bit unorthodox, but for me, Youtube videos have been extremely beneficial thanks to something called Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, or ASMR, and the community of Youtubers using this physiological phenomenon to make videos promoting inner peace and wellness.
ASMR refers to that “tingly” feeling on your head you might get when you’re starting to feel relaxed, like when you’re getting your hair washed at a salon or getting a massage. If you aren’t sure what I’m talking about, I recommend watching some of the videos below (with headphones) and seeing if you experience it.
Youtubers who make ASMR videos typically create sounds that result in the ASMR feeling while speaking in soft, kind voices. It sounds a bit silly, but many ASMR videos have over 1 million views, meaning they must work for some people! Some actually use them to help fall asleep.
Often, they are much like guided meditations. The videos that help me the most are ones that use affirmations and speak positively about healing and serenity.
Even if you don’t experience ASMR, you might find these videos relaxing anyway. While there’s no cure-all for our stressors, taking the time for something small like a Youtube video can really change your mindset.
