Unkind Words In The Political Arena

12 October 2016 Written by

Words hurt others and ourselves when used disrespectully. It deeply saddens me to hear the disrespectful words that are currently being used in the political arena. Name-calling, accusations, and mean-spirited words and pictures fill the wall of my Facebook feed and the television airwaves. When is it ever okay to verbally attack anyone? To accuse? To judge?

Participating in verbal attacks, accusations, and judgments – whether in or out of the political arena – shows my true character, and cannot come from a place of love and respect.

Love is respectful of others, even if their opinion and ideas are different than mine. When we attack one another, we invite destruction into our lives and the lives of others. My heart is shocked and saddened with the political cartoons that are being posted and the words that are being spoken. I am always allowed to express my opinion on a topic, but not to disparage others in an unkind and disrespectful way.

Vicious, malicious, disrespectful words have no place in my heart. Let the words of my mouth always seek to respect and honor others, no matter what their political viewpoint might be.

Raised on a dairy farm in upstate NY, I learned to work hard along with my five siblings. I grew up in a very conservative Mennonite-Amish church which shaped a lot of my fundamental core values and beliefs. After moving to Florida to attend college, I married and became mother to five children. Eventually, my unmanageable life came to a crashing halt and I found my way into an Al-Anon recovery program. Recovery has affected every area of my life and I love sharing the things I am learning with others so that they might also find hope for their own recovery.
