Avoidance is Fear

Avoidance is fear. This simple statement carries great power. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” Facing my fears can change my entire life. Not facing my fears can leave me paralyzed.

What do I fear?

Disappointing others? Not being liked? Being judged? Making a mistake? Looking foolish? Snakes, the dark, lightening, heights, insects, being alone……So much fear.

This I know for sure – when I live my life in perfect love, there is no longer any fear (There is no fear where love exists. Rather, perfect love banishes fear, for fear involves punishment, and the person who lives in fear has not been perfected in love.~ I John 4:18)

So if I am avoiding something in my life, I know that it is because of fear in my heart. If I can face my fear and let love fill that space, then there will no longer be room for the fear.

What am I avoiding today? Am I willing to step up and face that thing I have been avoiding because of my fear?

Raised on a dairy farm in upstate NY, I learned to work hard along with my five siblings. I grew up in a very conservative Mennonite-Amish church which shaped a lot of my fundamental core values and beliefs. After moving to Florida to attend college, I married and became mother to five children. Eventually, my unmanageable life came to a crashing halt and I found my way into an Al-Anon recovery program. Recovery has affected every area of my life and I love sharing the things I am learning with others so that they might also find hope for their own recovery.
